Welcome to the Murdoch Center!
On Saturday, August 21, 2021, dozens of community members gathered at the Murdoch Center to kick off the new academic year. Among these visitors was NAU President Dr. Cruz Rivera, Flagstaff Mayor Paul Deasy, Coconino Community College, Riverside Church of God in Christ Pastor Leonard Bryant, Dr. Trayce Moore, District 2 Supervisor Jeronimo Vasquez, Mark Reavis, and Melvin Hall. A free food truck fed the attendees with hot, hearty sandwiches and cold drinks! Along with this delicious food, the Southside Community Association hired a DJ, who captured the crowd with music and dancing.

However, the Southside Community Welcome was more than just a fun event. It was also an opportunity for Dr. Guthrie and his interns to learn more about the public’s perception and knowledge of Murdoch Center’s namesake, Cleo Murdoch. Cleo Murdoch was the former principal of the segregated Dunbar School, but few know her history and contributions to the Flagstaff community.
